KOB.com in New Mexico has reported that the Sierra Club is proposing a state “couch potato” tax. That is, a one percent tax on televisions and video games. The article noted that the $4 million in revenue would go for programs that “encourage families to get kids off of the couch and into the mountains,” including “an outdoor classroom to teach children about the outdoors.”
Three responses come to mind.
First, why is it the business of the Sierra Club or politicians the degree to which families play video games, watch television or climb mountains? It is merely a case of the Nanny State run amok.
Second, and more to the point, isn’t this just a special interest group looking to use the government and tax dollars to get what they want?
Third, and finally, consumers and businesses – including, of course, many small businesses – will get hit with higher costs.
Fortunately, lawmakers in New Mexico rejected this idea last year, according to the report, and hopefully will again this year.
