William F. Buckley Jr., R.I.P.

An overwhelming sadness struck me when I read today that conservative commentator William F. Buckley Jr. has died at the age of 82.

Buckley was the intellectual powerhouse who provided the foundation upon which the entire conservative philosophical and political movement in the United States rests today. He played key roles in opening the path to the White House for conservatives like Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush; in defeating communism; in the many free market successes over the past few decades; and in defending the values upon which our nation is built.

In a couple of personal meetings with Mr. Buckley, his charm, wit and kindness were quite evident.

In the end, William F. Buckley Jr. made it fun to be a conservative. He will be sorely missed.
