Another take on the new health care law and its effectiveness for small business

Scott Shane, A. Malachi Mixon III Professor of Entrepreneurial Studies at Case Western Reserve University, and a writer for Business Week always offers helpful insight on issues and market developments as to their impact on small business. In his latest piece for BusinessWeek.com, he argues that the new health care law won’t do anything to encourage young firms to offer health insurance. That’s because most do not appear to need to offer this benefit.

“Stated differently, offering employee health insurance doesn't appear to do anything to improve the performances of young companies, despite what some observers argue. We shouldn't claim that the new law will benefit small business owners by making their companies more successful,” wrote Shane.

He came to the conclusion by combing through Kauffman Foundation data, specifically the organization’s survey that tracks a cohort of nearly 5,000 new businesses started in 2004.
