WIPO, Innovation and IP Protection

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is holding its annual meetings of member states from September 20-29 in Geneva.

WIPO Director General Francis Gurry correctly observed in his opening remarks: "Innovation is central to economic growth and to the creation of new and better jobs. It is the key to competitiveness for countries, for industries and for individual firms. It is the process by which solutions are developed to social and economic challenges."

A WIPO release also noted, "The central importance of innovation and creativity in promoting wealth creation and in fostering new productive sectors was a recurrent theme in minister's statements. IP, they said, plays a vital and pivotal role in economic development... A number of ministers underlined that a balanced IP system is a means of creating a secure environment for investment in creativity and innovation." ...
