The Supreme Court of the United States called the individual mandate what the President
refused to call it -- a "tax."
U.S. SUPREME COURT: “…the shared responsibility
payment may for constitutional purposes be considered a tax… read as
imposing a tax on those who go without insurance.”
According to CBO,
75% of the individual mandate penalty (oops -- tax) falls on those making less than
$250,000.
The individual mandate was already unpopular, and so will this tax increase on Americans who can't afford insurance. President Obama will have to defend both.
